The historic town of Beja, located in the heart of Portugal, is a treasure trove of heritage and charm. Despite its small size, Beja offers a range of transportation options, including affordable, regular bus services and free bicycles, making it a highly accessible town for both residents and visitors. To enhance its public transportation system, the Municipality of Beja entrusted me with designing a series of maps and schedules for their urban buses.
For this project, I combined functionality and aesthetics to create maps tailored to Beja's unique character. The city center map is geographically accurate, showcasing its intricate street network and main sightseeing attractions. For the peripheral areas, I opted for a simplified 45-degree grid, striking a balance between visual clarity and geographic precision. Each sightseeing spot is marked with a custom icon, ensuring that locals and tourists can easily locate Beja's most significant landmarks.
The map's design leverages bright, saturated colors for the bus lines, reflecting the vibrant brand identity of Beja Municipality. This use of color not only enhances the map's visual appeal but also makes it easier for users to distinguish between different routes at a glanceTo cater to varying formats, I also developed a simplified version of the map, designed for smaller print materials and compact digital displays, ensuring the design's versatility and usability across different platforms.
This project captures the essence of Beja—its history, accessibility, and liveliness—through thoughtful design and attention to detail. By incorporating iconic landmarks, clear routes, and a visually striking layout, the maps serve as both practical tools and reflections of the town's unique spirit.
