The Maia transit map is a groundbreaking project that unifies all public transportation systems available in the municipality of Maia, Portugal. For the first time, it integrates the services of UNIR (the newly established main transit operator), STCP (the bus system connecting Maia and Porto), the metro network, and regional trains that link Maia with Porto and the broader northern region. This map is not just a tool for navigation but a comprehensive representation of Maia’s public transportation ecosystem, designed with usability, inclusivity, and clarity in mind.
One of the key highlights of this map is its inclusivity. It is one of the first maps in Portugal to use the ColorADD system, a color-coding language specifically designed for colorblind individuals. Each bus line is identified not only by its unique color but also by a corresponding symbol that ensures accessibility for all users. This thoughtful integration reflects a commitment to universal design and ensures that the map can be used effectively by everyone, regardless of their visual perception.
The map itself presents an extraordinary level of detail. It includes approximately 70 bus lines and 800 stops, with intricate routes weaving through the city center.
In some cases, as many as 25 lines intersect and overlap in different directions, requiring meticulous planning to ensure legibility. The map’s color-coding system groups lines based on their behavior in the city center, where many lines follow similar routes before diverging to serve different destinations in the periphery. This system not only improves readability but also simplifies navigation for commuters.
Geographically, the map balances accuracy with clarity. The city center is depicted with precise street layouts and landmarks, while the periphery ados a simplified 45-degree grid for better visual organization.
Additionally, the map identifies key points of interest such as universities, green zones, churches, shopping malls, and parking areas, with custom-designed icons provided by the municipality. These icons are visually appealing and help users quickly locate important destinations. A comprehensive map key further enhances usability, offering clear explanations of all symbols and features.
The fare zones are another critical aspect of the map. These zones are clearly delineated, making it easy for users to understand how much their journey will cost based on the distance traveled. The map also provides detailed information about interchanges between different modes of transport, including estimated travel times for connections between buses and metro lines. This level of detail ensures that the map is not just a static guide but a dynamic tool for planning efficient routes.
Despite its functional complexity, the map is visually cohesive and aesthetically pleasing. Bright, saturated colors represent the brand identity of Maia’s municipality, while the river flowing through the city introduces a natural, fluid element to the otherwise structured design. The project also involved creating a simplified version of the map for smaller formats, ensuring that it remains accessible across various platforms and contexts.
The final map is an impressive 1 x 1 meter square, offering a detailed and immersive view of Maia’s transit network. Its size and design make it an engaging and shareable resource for both residents and visitors. This project, with its innovative solutions and attention to detail, demonstrates the power of great design in enhancing urban mobility and accessibility.
