Nazaré, a picturesque coastal town in Portugal, is world-renowned for its giant waves and vibrant tourism. Despite its small size and a population of approximately 15 thousand residents, Nazaré offers a compact yet dynamic public transportation system with just four bus lines. Tasked by the city council to redesign their bus map, I embarked on a project that revealed unique challenges beneath its seemingly simple surface.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Nazaré’s bus network is the variable nature of its routes. The same bus line follows different trajectories at different hours, sometimes overlapping with other lines. While this adds flexibility to the system, it created a puzzle for designing a map that remained clear and accessible for locals and visitors alike. Translating this complexity into an intuitive design required creative solutions and careful iteration.

To ensure the map captured both accuracy and usability, I included iconic landmarks, such as Nazaré’s beaches, cultural sites, and points of interest for tourists. This made the map not just a tool for navigation but a valuable resource for exploring the town’s offerings.

The final design is a reflection of collaboration and attention to detail. By balancing the complexities of the bus system with a clean and visually engaging layout, the map offers clarity while respecting the town's unique character. This project was not only about creating a guide for transportation but also about celebrating Nazaré’s identity and making its bus system more approachable for everyone.

Below, I’m sharing the iterative process, with screenshots of work-in-progress versions highlighting the evolution of the map’s layout and details.
