Porto Shortcuts v.1
Porto transit map: trains, metro, and essential bus routes for efficient shortcuts
January 2024
Proposal
This project originated from the need to enhance the official Porto map that could be found at each metro station in the city.
In addressing the design issues of official design, one notable problem was the excessive empty space that could be utilized to provide essential information. For instance, I aimed to incorporate shortcuts for passengers seeking alternatives to the metro, especially considering the infrequent metro service in certain directions, sometimes with a train every 20 minutes.
Another significant drawback of the official metro map was the absence of the train line. Considering trains as a viable mode of transportation, it became apparent that their inclusion could significantly save time for users.

As you can see, Porto boasts numerous efficient pathways for travelers to explore. For instance, starting from Ermesinde train station, one can directly reach Hospital São João or Forum Maia, avoiding the city centre and transpording at Campanhã and Trindade stations.
I created two map variants—one with fare zones and another without. To demarcate fare zones, I opted for varying shades of grey instead of lines.
Additionally, I incorporated the Metrobus and Rosa lines, both are set to commence operations in 2024, according to authorities. I also reduced the five lines crossing Trinidade station into three, for clarity.
While I acknowledge some inaccuracies and misalignments in the released map, I intend to rectify them soon. Your feedback is valuable for ongoing improvements.
